History of Google
The household name and internet search phenomenon known as Google began life as a research project by two intrepid students by the names of Larry Page and Sergey Brin who were working to create a universal digital library as part of the Stanford Digital Library Project. (SDLP) By exploring the linking structures that make up the World Wide Web and various ways of link building Larry Page was able to design and create a web crawler that began exploring the internet in March 1996. Since then Google and the search phenomenon in general has grown beyond the bounds of anyone's imagination not least those of Page and Brin.
Google has also spawned many spin off industries by its existence including but certainly not limited to Search Engine Optimisation services, Social Media Optimisation and PPC. Google also provide the tools that can help people promote their own products and services with tips, adwords and webmaster tools. Another element which puzzles many people is the origins of the name of the search engine.
Google is actually a misspelling of the word googol which is the mathematical name for the number one followed by one hundred zeros. Google's place in modern culture was further cemented in 2006 when the verb 'Google' was added to the Merriam Webster Collegiate Dictionary with the definition stated as ,'to use the Google search engine to obtain information from the internet.'
Towards the end of 1998 Google had an index of around 60 million pages and despite still being labelled as 'BETA' was attracting favourable comments from many quarters who extolled its appearance and ease of use over its competitors of the time which included Lycos, Yahoo and Excite. As a result of continued expansion in the late 1990's Google moved to its present HQ at Mountain View which is referred to in tech circles as the Googleplex. The year 2000 heralded a new era for advertising when Google began selling advertisements, their unique PPC system with keyword bidding starting at $0.5 per click.
The internet is now without doubt the biggest marketing medium in the world and has all but replaced TV advertising as a way of reaching out to the target audience and Google has played a large part in this seismic shift. Obviously during this time the Google creators and some of the workforce have become extremely wealthy by way of shares and partnerships with the likes of NASA, BSB and Time Warner. With partnerships such as the aforementioned Google's growth potential would appear to be unstoppable and with the world changing at an alarming rate Google seem well placed to meet the next technological developments head on. It seems that Google can do no wrong and although there is the occasional documented blip on their way to World Wide Web domination it seems nothing will stop the relentless march of the world's favourite search engine.
History of Search Marketing
The term 'Search Engine Marketing' was first documented as being a term created by Danny Sullivan in 2001 and is a method of online marketing which promotes websites and the products and/or services they offer. This is achieved by increasing search engine visibility by way of Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Pay Per Click campaigns, contextual advertising and also paid placement to a certain extent.
The practice of SEO marketing first came into existence around the mid 1990's as a way to fund the development of the search engines and search in general. The rise in the number of websites is existence has spawned another niche area of expertise, that of the Digital Marketing Agency whose functions far outweigh simply providing advice on PPC, links and advertising. The typical Online Marketing Agency now offer everything from advanced tailor made SEO campaigns to Social Media Optimization by way of blogs, forums and live feeds through social networking sites such as Facebook, Digg and Twitter. The only problem about documenting the history of search is the speed in which it changes. It would not be beyond the bounds of imagination for this piece of writing to be outdated in little more than two years.
By 2007 Pay per Click campaigns were the main sources of income for the search engines with Google easily the main beneficiary. In response to the Google domination of the PPC market Yahoo and Microsoft signalled their intentions by joining together and eventually received approval from the regulators in February 2010.
Of course not everyone has the inclination or technical knowhow to facilitate and monitor their own online marketing campaign which is where an SEO Consultancy comes in. Although the techniques used are reasonably straightforward the main reason people outsource their SEO is a lack of capacity, this void is filled by a number of specialists who offer a number of services including links, onsite work and also content services. The vast majority of these companies use ethical practices and provide value for money but some are more 'white hat' than others. This seemingly obscure term refers to the way that the marketing is done and where the links, content, etc are sourced from.
There are a number of places where a company can buy less than reputable links for a fraction of the cost of sourcing links from good places that Google respects. Although these cheap 'dark' links may show some early promise they rarely have the longevity to sustain a websites ranking in the long run and can, in a worst case scenario result in suspension or even removal from the Google index.
A good way to ascertain an internet marketing firm's credentials is to look online and check any reviews or testimonials that a company may have. Although this won't guarantee they can get a website in the top positions it can give the potential client a useful insight into what a website owner can expect for their money.
History of Smart Traffic
Smart Traffic started life as a part of Communication 4 Ltd as a two man band and has since grown to dominate the UK search marketing sector with clients from the USA, Australia and Europe. The technical partner of Communication 4 Ltd worked on the SEO and the website which sold computers and laptop batteries whilst the more commercially minded partner concentrated on the sales and commerce side. As surprising as it might sound the two man band that sold computers and batteries were before long outranking major players in the IT industry for extremely competitive keyphrases including 'Laptop', 'Laptops' and 'laptop batteries'. This continued for some time in the same vein until one of the partners thought if we can do this so well ourselves why can't we do it for other people? The rest they say is history.
The next step the partners took in becoming the UK's largest search marketing agency was to invite a dynamic sales professional with extensive marketing experience to become a partner. The next task was employing some high powered sales professionals whose job it was to sell affordable SEO to the business world and convince them of the benefits of SEO over the more traditional marketing mediums such as TV, newspaper and magazine advertising.
The clients that took the plunge and entered the little known world of online marketing were soon very surprised at the enhanced positioning of their websites and the vast majority signed up for a twelve month contract. As a result of the great results and feedback from clients the SEO agency expanded their sales force and moved to larger premises which they have expanded yet again at the time of writing. In addition to providing industry leading SEO, Smart Traffic also provide free training programs to business and indeed anyone with an interest in the subject.
Although your average London SEO consultant will want to keep secrets Smart Traffic believes in being open about what they do and what the clients can expect for their money. Article and Press Release writing and submission, helpful software and downloads, keyword tools and how to use them are just a few of the services that Smart Traffic offer both on a paid for and free basis. In addition to increasing the sales team Smart Traffic has also expanded their technical team in order to cope with the rising demand. As all the time consuming laborious work is done in-house any problems experienced by clients can be rectified almost immediately.
