Smart Traffic SEO Tip #8 – Checking for Duplicate Content in Google

Google is hot on duplicate content but some is more damaging than others. If you have good content on your site then others will copy it and post on their sites. This is fine as long as you are being seen as authoritative for it. To check this you can perform a couple of simple searches within Googles index.

Smart Traffic SEO Tip #5 – Page Headers – H1 Tag

The H1 tag is an important SEO tag. You can have up to 6 page and subtitles, i.e. H1, H2, H3 etc, although 6 would generally be considered overkill, with just 1 or 2 probably being better. The H1 title should be used to indicate the PRIMARY key-phrase(s). You can use the H2 tag for your key-phrases of secondary relevance/importance to the page. The header tag for a page is clearly an opportunity to tell Google specifically, what the page is about.

Smart Traffic SEO Tip #4 – Utilising the Meta Description

The meta description will not improve you rankings (although duplicate descriptions can penalise your site with a duplicate penalty which could drop your rankings so I guess you could argue that they do!) BUT it can improve conversions. This is your opportunity to get your sales pitch and message across to the viewer. It s more of a sales copy and as such should be written with your customers in mind and show them that you have what they are looking for. Entice them to click on your listing with good use of keywords as these are highlighted in the search results.

Smart Traffic SEO Tip #3 – Meta Keywords – Useful or useless?

A long time ago, in a Search engine not far away, there used to be a really useful way to make your page relevant for keywords. It was called the ‘meta keywords’. Due to abuse and spamming this became redundant for Google and has been confirmed as no longer relevant (See Google Webmaster Central Blog here: http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2009/09/google-does-not-use-keywords-meta-tag.html). However, is it completely useless? No, used the right way the meta keywords can still be a useful tool for SEO.

Smart Traffic SEO Tip #2 – Hyphens versus Pipe Signs – Which one to use in Page Titles?

When putting together a good unique page title for your page you may well need to use a separator between keyphrases and words. The most popular 2 types are hyphens (-) or pipe signs (|) and you will see them widely used throughout the top sites in Google’s index. Of the 2 we prefer the hyphen as we have noticed possible issues with the pipe sign. It appears that sometimes Google has problems reading them when used in a search query.
