Smart Traffic SEO Tip #71 – About META NOODP tag

If SEO is about getting your shop window on to the high street, then the meta description is the doorway to that shopping experience.

The Meta Description is your opportunity to put some sales copy in front of Google’s searchers to try and entice them to click on your listing over your competitors. Although not a ranking factor you should still provide unique descriptions and make them appealing. This is your sales copy. You should also include a mention of your main keyword/keywords as these will be highlighted to the user.

Sometimes either on purpose or inadvertently you will have pages on your site that are missing a meta description. This leave the search engines 2 choices; choose some content from your page as the description OR take the description from the one you have (if you have one!) in the Open Directory Project or DMOZ. However, you may not always want your DMOPZ description showing, here’s how you can stop that happening by making use of a meta tag:

‘meta name=”robots” content=”NOODP”‘ – this tag informs Search Engines (only those that support this tag) not to use any information you have in Open Directory Project.

And if you want to specifically implement it only for Googlebots, you can alternatively use this tag

It may take a couple of days before Google changes in the snippet will appear in the index.
