Google Expands Local Result Details
For some people, the appeal of visiting a new city lies in the anticipation of meeting a familiar face. But for others, it is the prospect of acquiring new acquaintances, or just experiencing new things. In my case, a new city means soaking in some culture by sampling the best of local fare.
Like any sensible traveler, I usually do research before plunging myself into foreign territory. Fortunately, the brainy bunch at Google must have had the same idea since they have made improvements to their SERPS algorithm so users can easily get information on real places.
The feature might be new but Google embodying the concept of localization has been around for a while. Remember the Google Places option that used to be found on the top portion of SERPS? Well it appears that they have already integrated this into the standard search results. Say I was going to London for the first time and wanted to find a pub where I can enjoy a good pint, without getting trampled on by a flock of regulars. Someone suggested The Mayflower off Rotherhithe Street. I could simply type [the mayflower pub] and get this:
Getting directions to this cozy-looking watering hole is great, but having details about the pub itself is even better. But what brings home the bacon is pegman. This map navigation tool enables me to view what the place looks like on street level. This makes deciding on whether or not to give it a go that much easier. I figure I’ll enjoy my beer at The Mayflower while marveling at the view the River Thames has to offer.
It seems that this new innovation also works if you are not really searching for a particular venue. If I wanted to eat a steak sandwich in the most extraordinary of settings, I could start my search by using a generic key phrase like [cafes in London], hit enter and then:
From the screen shot, you can see that Google will still pull up a list of options that could interest me. To see the details part, all you need to do is click on the Instant Preview button. Fancy dining amidst the lush foliage and drowning sounds of a rainforest!
Of course, it should be noted that the specifics are always dependent on the information that is already available online. Still, it is a great tool to have when you are planning your itinerary or just want to see if that “something new” will definitely turn into something so dearly familiar. Try it for yourself today!
