Smart Traffic SEO Tip #36 – Javascript Redirects/Meta Refresh Redirects

The use of Javascript/Meta Refresh Redirects is a form of spam and a violation of Google quality guidelines. Why?

Sneaky JavaScript redirects – when a redirect link is embedded in JavaScript, the search engine indexes the original page rather than following the link, whereas users are taken to the redirect target. This practice is deceptive because it displays different content to users and to Googlebot, and can take a visitor somewhere other than where they intended to go.

Meta Refresh Redirects – a meta tag that sends the user to a new URL. However, it is not supported by all browsers and can be confusing to the user.

The only SEO Friendly redirection recognized by Google is the use of 301 redirect.
