Smart Traffic SEO Tip #3 – Meta Keywords – Useful or useless?

A long time ago, in a Search engine not far away, there used to be a really useful way to make your page relevant for keywords. It was called the ‘meta keywords’. Due to abuse and spamming this became redundant for Google and has been confirmed as no longer relevant (See Google Webmaster Central Blog here: http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2009/09/google-does-not-use-keywords-meta-tag.html). However, is it completely useless? No, used the right way the meta keywords can still be a useful tool for SEO.

Relevancy - there are still some search engines that place relevancy on the meta keywords and so it is definitely worth completing for your site. There isn’t a limit but we recommend listing no more than about 20.

Keyword research – by viewing the source code of competitors sites (Ctrl U) you can pick up some good keywords to target that you may have overlooked for you own campaign.

These are at least 2 good ways to utilise the meta keywords and I am sure that there may well be others. It would be interesting to see what other potential uses there, please feel free to add comments.
