Smart Traffic SEO Tip #5 – Page Headers – H1 Tag

The H1 tag is an important SEO tag. You can have up to 6 page and subtitles, i.e. H1, H2, H3 etc, although 6 would generally be considered overkill, with just 1 or 2 probably being better. The H1 title should be used to indicate the PRIMARY key-phrase(s). You can use the H2 tag for your key-phrases of secondary relevance/importance to the page. The header tag for a page is clearly an opportunity to tell Google specifically, what the page is about. Here’s a few tips

1) Try not to stuff too many keywords into the H1 – focus on your primary keyword(s) if possible

2) Keep the H1 shortish

3) Keep the most important key-phrase at the front of the H1

4) Do not duplicate headers on different pages, or make them too similar

5) Only have 1 instance of H1 on any page

6) You can use more than one instance of H2, but do not use the same key-phrase as the H1 and do not repeat the same key-phrase in multiple H2 tags

7) If possible use the H1 towards the top of the page, in a prominent position/font/bold type. Not essential, but can add relevance.
