Google competing webpages and Monthly Searches are 36% correlated(medium)
Our common sense will tell us that popular search terms have more competing webpages.
Same analogy with popular hit songs being played by number of competing radio stations hoping gather listeners. But this research tells us it is only “medium correlated”. I selected more than 30 keywords at random then gather their competing webpages and monthly searches estimate. Finally I plot the data in a scatter plot after all outliers are removed.
Below are the plot:

Based from this analysis, it shows the keyword competing webpages in the Google index and estimated monthly searches are somewhat “medium correlated” with R= 36% based from the rules of correlation.
How to use this data in our SEO strategies:
a. Popular keywords have many competing webpages in the Google index.
b. Competing webpages in the index can contributes to the difficulty of the keyword since there are many pages to be ranked in that particular search query.
c. Therefore choosing less popular keywords mean lesser competition and less difficulty.
